Scintillation crystals are commonly utilized in detectors to transform X-rays or gamma rays into light pulses, which are subsequently detected by either a Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) or a Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM).

How to choose the right scintillation crystal for different application fields?


Nuclear medicine imaging

Such as PET and SPECT, scintillation crystals are required to have high light output to improve detection sensitivity, fast decay time to achieve fast imaging and high temporal resolution, and good matching of emission spectrum with photodetectors to improve light collection efficiency. LYSO and BGO are commonly used in PET, while NaI (Tl) is widely used in SPECT.

High-energy physics experiments

High-energy particles are usually required to be detected. Scintillation crystals should have high density and high atomic number to effectively block and detect particles, and have good energy resolution to distinguish particles of different energies. For example, BGO crystals are suitable for such scenarios.

Security inspection equipment

Such as luggage security at airports and customs, which requires rapid and accurate detection of radioactive substances or prohibited items. At this time, scintillation crystals should have high light output and fast response speed to quickly generate signals and analyze them. NaI (Tl) crystals can meet some of these requirements.

Industrial non-destructive testing

Mainly detects defects inside industrial parts, requiring scintillation crystals to have high detection efficiency and good spatial resolution for X-rays or γ-rays. CsI (Tl) is often used in industrial flaw detection due to its good response to rays and relatively high resolution.
